PaperShell is a new material group enabling the transition from fossil to 100% biogenic products. By pressing paper into advanced cellulose components, we aim to cut emissions with up to 98% substituting plastics, glass fiber and aluminium.
As Climate change is pressing, we know that raw materials constitute a majority of global emissions, making up the products and constructions of daily life. With our ecosystems on alert, it is time to rethink the way we make products, to drastically cut emissions and begin to reconnect to nature.
Fossil to 100% biogenic
Inspired by nature’s 3.8 billion years of bio intelligence, PaperShell produces 100% biogenic components with minimal climate impact. 100% bio content means 0.00% fossil in our material, not only preventing additional atmospheric CO2 but also supporting the possibilities for a closed and regenerative loop at the end of life. Simply returning resource to nature.
Substituting materials to reduce emissions and go circular
By substituting materials known for high climate impact such as various types of fossil products, PaperShell and our clients can make substantial CO2 reductions for every kg material replaced. By pressing paper sheets into load bearing cellulose components, forming shapes commonly found in plastic and metall, the potential of substituting fossil materials within automotive construction and interior is real.
PaperShell CO2 reduction for substituted materials:
Metal (Aluminium) > Up to 98% per kg component* when replaced with PaperShell
Glass fiber (GFRP) > Up to 98% per kg component* when replaced with PaperShell
Plastic (PP) > Up to 90% per kg component* when replaced with PaperShell
Wood (Veneer) > Up to 50% per kg component* when replaced with PaperShell
* Based on Cradle to Cradle with incineration EoL.
* PaperShell is currently working towards improved values by utilizing pyrolysis as EoL.
Local manufacturing
PaperShell’s first factory, Factory One, is now in operation! Since spring 2024, our brand new manufacturing facility of 3 200 sqm has accompanied our pilot plant in Tibro, Sweden. 2,5 hours from Stockholm surrounded by farmland, in the centerpoint of previous manufacturing Mecka for furniture, PaperShell finds itself in brilliant company, utilizing local knowledge to develop and manufacture our new material into low impact components.
Factory One and the pilot plant now holds 3 fully automated production lines; S, M and L for both complex and flat surface component manufacturing. Currently ongoing are pre-series and volume production for the automotive, interior, and flat surface segments, while also preparing a greenery project to grow plants using biochar made from production waste around the building spaces.
Waste to biochar
By joining forces with local partners and international clients we work towards closing the loop to turn production waste into biochar. PaperShell’s ultimate aim is to close the loop and create a circular bio economy where our source material from wood returns to soil, with potential to support biodiversity and the growth of wood or crops. At present, our production waste from Factory One is turned into biochar by pyrolysis in close distance to our factory. Moving forward, we are working to extend this procedure and enable a circular take back for any PaperShell product at end of life. Further improving our values of CO2 reduction as biochar replaces incineration, storing biogenic CO2 into the ground by returning resources to nature.
